Our Programmes

Women and rights

We work with a variety of partners to promote and protect the rights of women. Women have a right to live in an environment free from violence and discrimination, equal access and control over economic and natural resources, sexual and reproductive health rights, right to assemble, associate and express themselves. BIWA has focused on putting women at a fore front of defending women’s rights. We have implemented projects on increasing access and control over natural resources in western Uganda through defending women’s environmental rights. We have also implemented advocacy activities to promote and protect sexual and reproductive health rights of adolescent mothers in Isingiro and Kiruhura districts. At BIWA, we believe that when women are aware of their rights and are empowered to defend them, they have the capacity to accelerate sustainable development.development

Climate Justice

Women have proven to be the leading actors in implementing more equitable and sustainable solutions to climate change. Women in rural areas of Uganda are at a forefront of climate mitigation and adaptation since climate change affects women’s health, agriculture and the environment. However, the inequalities, environmental injustices and exploitation faced by women limit their resilience, adaptation and mitigation As BIWA, we empower women through advancing gender equality to effectively participate in climate solutions, demand for climate justice through involving them in sustainable initiatives aimed at combating climate change.
